Gavin Williamson is impressed by City Heights E-ACT Academy ahead of reopening
Pupil and staff at City Heights E-ACT Academy were delighted to meet the Secretary of State, Gavin Williamson, as he visited the academy ahead of pupils returning next week.
Arriving at 1pm on 2 March 2021, Gavin Williamson dedicated his time to visit City Heights E-ACT Academy and see the COVID-19 testing in action, before the full reopening to all pupils from Monday 8 March 2021. He was greeted at the front gate by the Year 10 head boy and head girl, Will and Cecelia, as well as by E-ACT staff members. These included Jane Millward, CEO, Errol Comrie, headteacher at City Heights and Fuzel Choudhury, the national director of education.
The Secretary of State then went to see the COVID-19 testing centre, which has been set up in the sports hall. He was particularly impressed with the organisation as he saw pupils being tested, and in discussions with E-ACT staff members the importance of pupils going back to their academies was highlighted, as well as how crucial COVID-19 testing is in academies.
Overall Mr Williamson was incredibly impressed with E-ACT’s hard work and dedication in ensuring that testing was in place and that the academy was ready to welcome all pupils back from next week. He was also very impressed with the consent received from both pupils and teachers on COVID-19 testing, with over 90% agreeing to be tested.
Whilst at City Heights E-ACT Academy, the Secretary of State was also interviewed by Channel 5 News. His visit really highlights that the trust is doing very well in its approach to this unprecedented situation, whilst keeping excellent education at the forefront.
